GPS ENG: God Always Gives Us a Way Out!

In this passage, James teaches us that trials and temptations are not the same thing. James helps us understand how temptation begins, how it grows, and where it can ultimately lead us.

Let’s read James 1:12-15.

Observe:

• What person does James call “blessed”?

• What is the reward for those who endure trials and temptation?

• What does James say a person should NOT say when they are tempted?

• Where does temptation come from according to these verses?

• What does desire produce?

• What does sin produce when it is allowed to grow?

Let’s remember that at the beginning of the letter, James is writing to believers who were experiencing trials, difficulties, and pressure. James talks about how trials can produce perseverance and maturity. Now, in verses 12-15, James shows us another danger: A trial can become an opportunity to sin if we respond by following our own desires.

For example:

• A financial difficulty can lead someone to greed or stealing.

• A disappointment can lead someone to seek satisfaction in something that God does not approve of.

It all begins with our desires. “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away and enticed by their own evil desire.” We all have desires. The problem comes when a desire takes control and becomes something we want more than we want to obey God.

What does this teach us about the importance of examining our hearts?

Why do you think it is easier to stop something when it is still just a desire than when it has already become an action?

James does not promise that we will never face temptations. He teaches us something better: We can stand firm because God is faithful and He always provides a way out.
