The entire chapter 8 of Romans is the climax of the Apostle Paul’s teaching on: life in the Spirit, freedom from sin, and security in Christ. With this in mind, let us read and reflect together on Romans 8:9–14.
“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”
Romans 8:9-14 NLT
LET US REFLECT:
* Who does not belong to Christ?
* We know that our bodies inherited death from Adam; however, there is life within us.
* Where is that life manifested?
* What Spirit is in us, and what can He do for us?
* What is the best way to know that we are children of God?
Complete the sentence:
We have life because we have the same ____________ as Christ; that is, we are not merely with Christ—we are ______ Christ. This is possible because we are in the Ekklesia, the body of Christ.
CONCLUSION:
The Spirit defines who you are. This means He is not optional—He is ESSENTIAL.
There is a new spiritual life, even though the body is already subject to death. The resurrection of our spirit has already taken place.
The Holy Spirit was and is the guarantee. The evidence of our adoption as God’s children is being led by the Spirit.
VERSE TO MEMORIZE:
“So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life.”
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 NLT
